Excellence comes from training (8)

This advice is from Sunday school -优秀是训练出来的 (8)- on 2/24/19 at Michiana Chinese Christian Church (MCCC).

Five Languages of Love

  1. Word of Encouragement. i.e., Honey, dinner is delicious, I love you.
    1. Abilities: good grades, good sports performance.
    2. Moral principles: helping the teacher, helping clean up, being on time.
    3. Help/ remind each other: ask your kids to encourage your spouse.
  2. Act of Service: Mutually serve, do what is not expected. i.e. If your spouse is too busy, you help him to clean his/her car/room. Kids are really busy during high school, they sleep too little, so it is time you help them out (mow the lawn, wash clothes, clean dishes, don’t criticize them).
  3. Gift-giving: recognize when gifting is what your kids need. i.e. If you travel to a new place, and your kid still wants a souvenir, that probably means that he/she still like gifts. However, sometimes, they may want/need other types of love. If you follow you around, they probably want quality time.
  4. Quality time: i.e. sitting together after work/school, fishing, skiing, dating with your kids (dinner, movie).
  5. Physical Touch and Closeness: i.e. hug.

Encourage with love, training/discipline with encouragement

  1. Reward for good performance (because of ability). Concerns about differentiating rewards and bribe. Example: Bribe – Last shopping trip, kid behaved badly, so this time agree with him/her ahead of time a reward for good behavior. Rewards – Remind your kid of the bad behavior and warn him, later if he/she behaves well, reward him.

Actions that discourages

  1. Do not harp
  2. Do not use scarcasm

Encouraging training and discipline principles

  1. Encourage before an activity

Bible verses:
Genesis 1:26-27 26 God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.

1 John 1:26-27 7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God. 8 He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.

John 13:35 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
